It is almost certain you will find at least an excavator in every construction or landscaping project site you check.

Yes, they are that popular. The popularity of the excavator is due to its versatility. Excavators are ideal for digging, earthmoving, and a few more site activities.

Structurally, an excavator comprises a boom, dipper or stick, and bucket in its upper body. These parts collectively connect to a cab sitting on a rotating house that can turn 360 degrees conveniently.

Therefore, an excavator can quickly move with an extensive motion range, even in a confined space.

Some excavators come with tracks, while others are fitted with wheels. The choice will depend on the project’s needs, which is why excavators can easily meet the requirements of most projects. However, of the several activities an excavator can handle on a site, it does better in some than others.

Below is a list of the five best applications of this piece of heavy equipment;

Digging and Earthmoving.

An excavator is the most used piece of heavy equipment for digging and earthmoving on the site. It can easily handle all forms of digging, including holes and trenches. Excavators can also grade land and do general landscaping efficiently. You can move dirt, debris, rock, soil, and more around the job site quickly using an excavator.

The excavator shines the most in digging when digging trenches. Trench digging means digging holes of different sizes in the ground to create space to install various types of foundations or utilities. The excavator’s bucket is fitted with teeth-like prongs which are strong enough to break ground and scoop the earth underneath seamlessly. Compared to manual equipment or other less-suited methods, digging trenches with an excavator saves time and requires less effort.

You can also use your excavator for landscape grading. Grading means levelling the ground to make it suitable for a construction project. It can also mean the sculpting of land to control the flow of water from one area to another. You also grade the land to create space for plants, carve out pathways, or install new landscaping elements. Jobs in the grading category require a partial or complete reworking of the land, usually by digging up and resettling the ground.

Again, the bucket and sheer power of the excavator make it the best piece of heavy equipment for such jobs.

Forestry.

You most likely do not expect to see forestry on this list, considering we are talking about construction. However, this machine’s outstanding versatility and power make it a favourite in the forestry industry. The forestry industry is responsible for maintaining and cultivating forests, which are the primary source of paper, pulp, lumber, and other essential products.

How do excavators help in forestry? The first forestry-related use of excavators is harvesting and handling trees and other heavy related materials. The excavator also helps to remove branches and shear trees to improve safety in the forest. This versatile heavy equipment also comes in handy when creating access routes in the woods.

Forestry-specific excavators are often equipped with shear, mulcher, and related attachments. They are also available in various sizes and options, including wheel or track options. Therefore, an excavator is suited to both the unique terrain of the forests. Your choice of excavator for forestry will depend on the type of forest, how close the trees are, and the kind of ground.

Demolition.

You may need to demolish an existing structure to create the space for a new and better structure. While demolition is often overlooked, it is commonly one of the stumbling blocks in a construction process. Demolishing a structure is as vital as demolishing it properly. For example, if you are demolishing a structure in a residential area, the process must be safe and in line with the standard regulations.

In addition to doing an excellent job in digging and preparing the ground for further construction activities, excavators are also perfect for removing existing structures. This piece of heavy equipment is solid and powerful, and compatible with a long list of attachments.

Using the right excavator for your demolition projects ensures additional safety and stability for the operator and everyone else on site. Once you replace the traditional bucket with the breaker attachment, you have all you need to destroy even tougher areas more precisely. You can also perform other demolition-related activities effectively.

With the beaker attachment, the excavator can break through almost anything, including stone, concrete, and other tough materials. You may stick to the traditional general-purpose bucket when dealing with less tough structures.

Even after demolition, the excavator’s handling capabilities come in handy in removing debris.

Getting rid of debris.

Excavators are excellent at handling material and removing debris. If you have debris from a fallen structure lying around after a demolition project or a natural disaster, you can trust the excavator to clear them quickly and efficiently. The flexible nature of an excavator makes it perfect for removing debris. Excavators come in different sizes and types, so it is easy to choose the right one for the task at hand. For example, you may need an excavator with more lifting power for some projects and one with improved manoeuvrability for others.

Note that “debris,” as used in this case, does not mean a specific material. The debris to be lifted in any case may be different. However, the excavator will always be equal to the task, thanks to the wide range of available attachments you can introduce to get the job done.

How Do You Get An Excavator?

Chances are you will need an excavator for your next construction project. However, the high cost of this piece of equipment means the outright purchase is not always an option. Fortunately, you can rent from a reputable heavy equipment store. Most stores selling CAT parts UK will likely have the excavator and the attachments you need for rent or outright purchase.

Many people are not aware of the value of using construction equipment and vehicles to protect workers and give an excellent quality to their completed work. Construction sites could not get anything accomplished without the various construction vehicles and equipment. It is not humanly possible for workers to lift tons of weight without the assistance of valuable, heavy equipment and vehicles. Whether workers are constructing a towering office building or building sites with homes, a large civil or commercial project requires construction vehicles to get the job done and keep their workers safe.

Construction work covers many different requirements whether it’s dumping, lifting, or moving heavy loads. You need the right vehicle and machinery to get the job done. It doesn’t matter what the size or scale of the towing will be, you need the right equipment to get it done in a timely manner. There are well over 19 different kinds of construction vehicles and equipment that are absolutely mandatory for all sorts of industries.

In this article, we are going to talk about all these construction vehicles and the role each plays in starting a construction project to the final steps when the entire plan has come together.

The Different Construction Vehicles

During construction assignments, you will need a variety of equipment and vehicles on the site. Here is a list of needed equipment, what parts they play, and when they are needed. Construction sites could not get anything accomplished without the various construction vehicles and equipment. It is not humanly possible for workers to lift tons of weight without the assistance of valuable, heavy equipment and vehicles. Whether workers are constructing a towering office building or a city block of office buildings, all large civil or commercial projects require construction vehicles to get the job done and keep their workers safe.:

Dump Trucks

These trucks are also considered to be a workhorse among vehicles. Dump trucks can bring needed materials to a construction site as well as tow debris away from the site. There are several kinds of dump trucks including:

Bulldozers

The bulldozer is probably the most utilized workhorse on a construction site due to its extraordinary strength. In simple terms, the bulldozer is a large tractor with an enormous blade attached to the front. These vehicles can lift and remove enormous weights of sand, debris, and soil.

Due to their design for gripping the ground, they can move over most terrains easily. Their wide tracking ability can cover a vast area in a timely manner. By distributing the weight of the vehicle, the applied pressure is decreased greatly.

Bulldozers have a torque divider that will transform the engine power allowing for dragging abilities and can tow very heavy loads easily. They are commonly used to clear roads, remove large obstacles, trees, debris, etc. They are often used to dig trenches for farming as well as for the military.

Off-Road Dump Trucks

Also known as articulated trucks. These huge trucks are for mining operations where huge amounts of aggregate must be hauled away. They are perfect for off-road operations for moving over very rough terrain.

Side Dump Trucks

These trucks move faster than other trucks for unloading large amounts of debris. They are used on sites where there is a great deal of space to move around due to their length. These trucks can tilt on the side for dumping but have a much lower risk of tipping over.

Standard Dump Trucks

These trucks are used more than any other dump truck on a construction site. They have excellent maneuverability but cannot be used on soft soils.

Backhoes

Backhoes are used on sites to move soil. They can be mounted on a regular tractor or a front loader. They are commonly used to dig trenches or ditches for laying down cables, foundations, and pipes. They can also be used to excavate dirt or move snow.

Backhoes can travel to construction sites where other vehicles cannot go. They are perfect for cleaning construction sites, digging up deep-rooting trees, and their roots. These same trucks can also be used to plant trees and dig post holes.

Front-Loaders

Front loaders are also known as bucket loaders, front-end loaders, or scoop loaders. They are very much like bulldozers just further off the ground. They have enormous wheels that make this vehicle perfect for covering extremely rough ground. They have moveable arms with a square bucket to transport material from one place to another. They also have interchangeable tools including forks or other buckets. Front-loaders are commonly used for moving dirt on construction sites and for road work. They are also used for moving building materials including bricks, pipes, and digging tools. In some cases, they are utilized to remove snow.

Graders

Also referred to as road graders or motor graders, they are equipped with a long blade and their purpose is to remove small amounts of dirt to create flat surfaces. Graders are often used for constructing roads as well as for the maintenance of gravel or dirt roads.

Graders are used for preparing the base court of paved roads in order to create a wide flat surface where asphalt will be poured. They are also the chosen tool to set native soil foundation pads before constructing large buildings.

Trenchers

Trenchers are used for a number of purposes making this equipment very versatile. Due to its flexibility, it is very popular for digging trenches, laying pipes, installing drainage, and preparing trench warfare.

There are different kinds of trenchers including:

Chain Trenchers

Chain trenchers are created with a toothed metal wheel and are used for cutting pavement during road maintenance.

Forklifts

Forklifts are very important and powerful construction equipment. They are used to move heavy loads around a site or a warehouse. They lift and transport objects that a human cannot move. A forklift is an indispensable piece of equipment on any site.

There are several kinds of forklifts with each having a different load capacity. They range from simple pallet jacks to an industrial telehandler to move loads that are unreachable by a wheeled loader or backhoe. Most telehandlers use a computer that has sensors to monitor the vehicle. The different kinds dictate the maximum weight they can deliver.

The operator can tilt the forks and blades to compensate for loads that angle the blades toward the ground and increase the risk of slipping.

Concrete Mixing Trucks

Mixing trucks combine cement, sand, or gravel along with water to form concrete. The mixer has a revolving drum mounted on the truck that mixes the components.

When a smaller amount of cement is needed, a portable concrete mixer is used. It offers the workers enough time to use the concrete mixture before it hardens.

Construction vehicles are important for any construction project. Despite the number of laborers, it is not possible for workers to carry out some activities. The use of construction vehicles and construction equipment will speed up the construction process and help workers make their jobs less laborious and difficult.

Transfer Dump Trucks

These trucks are pulled by a separate trailer. They come with a movable cargo container which will greatly increase the load capacity without having an effect on its maneuverability.

Wheel Trenchers

These vehicles are created with a toothed metal wheel for cutting pavement during road maintenance. Many construction companies use wheel trenchers to have access to underground road utilities.

Micro Trenchers

These trenchers are used in urban areas requiring construction work. They are designed with a cutting wheel to cut micro trenches instead of constructing large trenches.

Loaders

As the name suggests, loaders are used to load materials. They are used on construction sites to load and move construction materials around. Some materials include dirt, snow, asphalt, demolition debris, recycled material, rocks, and gravel.

Loaders can be either wheeled or tracked. Wheeled loaders are like mobile shovels used to transfer material from stockpiles on the ground or to trucks for transportation around the construction site. There are different types of loaders including bucket loaders, skid-steer loaders, payloaders, and scoop loaders. Each loader serves a different purpose.

Loaders can be either permanently mounted or have removable attachments. The bucket can be expanded as well.

Crawler Dozers

Crawler dozers are the most powerful construction vehicles anywhere. They are tracked vehicles that are extremely stable. They have a variety of blades mounted on the front to move materials around. They are often used for work consisting of laying new roadways or removing overburdened mining operations. The smaller crawler dozers are used as grading tractors or for automated grade control for establishments of complex contours.

Compactors

If you do not have good soil compaction, you could have erosion issues in the foundation, pipe breaks, leaks, and slab cracks. This can result in structural failure and an increase in the cost of maintenance. A compactor is a very important construction vehicle that is used to compact soil. No matter the size of the construction project, a compactor is an important vehicle for construction sites.

There are different kinds of compactors. The baler-wrapper compactor is used to compact bales and trash compactors are used to reduce the level of trash. Vibrating plate compactors are used for narrow areas where other equipment cannot maneuver. Rammer compactors are used to make trenches, while smooth rollers are used during road construction and other projects. Smooth rollers are the most common kind of compactors.

Cranes

Cranes are a common sight on construction sites. They are created with pulleys and cables that will lower and lift loads beyond human abilities. Not only do they lift and lower materials, but they also move material horizontally. Many construction companies use cranes to help move heavy materials that workers cannot perform.

Cranes can remain in place or move around. Mobile cranes have large wheels for stability and support the crane while it’s raised higher while holding a heavy load. Towering cranes are commonly used in the construction of tall buildings.

Excavators

Excavation is continually active at all construction sites. As excavation can be expansive, heavy equipment is required. Excavators are one of the most valuable construction vehicles needed during that time.

An excavator has a bucket, boom, dipper, and a cab located on a rotating platform. The house sits on the top of the tracked or wheeled undercarriage and comes in various sizes. The smaller compactors are called compact excavators or mini excavators.

Excavators are used for digging holes, trenches, and foundations, having a hydraulic hammer makes them more efficient and effective than other excavation equipment. Mostly, they are used in industries such as mining, construction, forestry, demolitions, dredging rivers, or lifting heavy objects.

Conveyors

These machines are used to convey materials from one place to another. They are used to move materials of any shape, size, or weight. Conveyor systems are used in various industries including agriculture, automotive, mining, electronics, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, food processing, print finishing, bottling, canning, and packaging.

In many cases, the shaft of the conveyor is braced by wheels that allow the operation of the shaft around a construction site. Wheeled conveyors are seen around most sites to move large, bulky stones, and bricks from one place to another.

In the light of the recent introduction of the Safer Lorry Scheme and Construction Logistics and Cycle Safety (CLOCS) project, the Direct Vision Standard proposals have further increased the need for improved driver safety and legislative adherence.

The Safer Lorry Scheme

The Safer Lorry Scheme mandates safer HGV zones and several measures to ensure lorries are not allowed to ply London roads, except they are equipped with basic safety equipment. This condition applies to construction vehicles, which are key players in many fatal collisions with pedestrians and cyclists. (TfL)

The CLOCS Scheme

The CLOCS scheme unites the construction logistics industry to revolutionise work-related road risk management (WRRR) and ensure complete compliance with road safety culture across the industry. The primary goal of CLOCS is to improve vehicle safety by tackling safety imbalance and advocating for the wider adoption of industry best practices. (CLOCS)

Poor driver safety is costly.

According to the Health and Safety Executive’s figures, employers spend up to £1,6million and 7,400 to cater to non-fatal injuries and fatal injuries, respectively. Considering this, it is only rational to advocate for the adoption of best practices in the construction industry, in line with the mandates of The Safer Lorry Scheme and CLOS.

Below are four proven hacks to ensure improved driver safety in your construction vehicles fleet.

1. License Checks
While construction site drivers can handle different construction vehicles, it is important to verify each driver’s license regularly. This is a simple but effective way to ensure the supply chain stays reliable and protect the staff both on-site and when moving between their homes and the worksite.

The DLVA reports that about 2.9 million drivers across the UK have points on their licence, while about 7,000 drivers with 12 points or higher still parade themselves as legal drivers on Britain’s roads – the usual limit before being banned as a driver. (Fleet News)

Experts have recommended that firms ensure regular and rigorous checks of licenses to ensure every driver is adequately licensed for the type of vehicles they drive and effectively track penalty points.

So, invite all the drivers handling your fleet of construction vehicles and check if they all have clean licenses.

2. Health Checks
Construction machines work on difficult terrains and execute complex tasks. Therefore, they require regular maintenance to keep performing optimally. It also helps you monitor the condition of your fleet and track wear and tear effectively.

If you get your fleet from a hire company, ensure you work with only providers with specialist knowledge of construction vehicles. Such companies can offer regular and comprehensive maintenance, as your fleet requires. This will also protect your investment.

3. Driver Behaviours
The complex nature of construction site works means they are subject to time restrictions, budgetary constraints, and customer expectations. Therefore, it is vital to grant your drivers sufficient breaks during work.

Construction companies now set up on-site welfare facilities to provide drivers with adequate rest. However, when permanent facilities cannot work, especially in remote locations, welfare vans have proven to be an easier yet effective way to fulfil your legal duty of care obligations.

Just drive these fully-equipped mobile rest areas on site. You can have them in multiple locations within the same day. This method is efficient and cost-effective, especially with multi-site or mobile workers.

4. GPS Telematics Tracking Systems
The recent advancement in telematics technologies makes it possible to keep all vehicles and equipment in the best conditions. With automatically tracked fleet maintenance, you can ensure maximum on-site safety and ensure your construction vehicles’ fleet performs optimally.

The technology keeps track of the driver’s wellbeing over long stops. There is an automatic warning if there is a change in a driver’s behaviour emanating from unusual patterns that may indicate the need for help. The system can also offer reports on strange or aggressive drive behaviours, including sudden cornering, harsh braking, and overspeeding.

Other reasons to use a GPS telematics tracking system include ‘geo-fences,’ which notifies drivers of site safety hazards, such as power lines or utilities, and the capabilities to block talking, texting, or emailing from the phone while the vehicle is working.

Final Words
The need for a safer construction site and work atmosphere for drivers and the construction fleet cannot be overemphasised. This article has provided a few tips to achieve that, depending on the specifics of your site and project. Some or all of these tips are applicable to ensure your fleet stays very fit and your workers stay safe.
